Title: The Race of Faith

Big Idea: The Christian life is a race in which we struggle and endure the way Jesus taught us, in the light of what He has done for us at the Cross.
1. Jesus is our example (1-3).
2. Endure for righteousness (4-13).
3. Pursue holiness (14-17).

BFG Study Questions:

  1. How does Hebrews 12:1–3 portray Jesus as our example in enduring the race of faith? What specific actions or attitudes of Jesus are highlighted, and how do they contrast with our own struggle?
  2. What is the difference between the discipline mentioned in Hebrews 12:4–11 and punishment? How does the author use the analogy of earthly fathers to explain God's discipline?
  3. What warning does the story of Esau in verses 16–17 serve to illustrate? Why does the author of Hebrews include this example in a passage about endurance and holiness?
  4. What “weights” or “sins” are clinging closely to you right now that are hindering your endurance in the Christian life? How can you practically “lay them aside” as the passage commands?
  5. How do you typically respond to hardship or suffering? Based on this passage, how might you begin interpreting those trials as loving discipline rather than divine rejection?
  6. Have you viewed God's discipline as something to endure or something to avoid? How does this text challenge or correct your perspective on the Lord’s intentions in your trials?
  7. What does striving for holiness look like in your life right now? Are there areas where, like Esau, you may be tempted to trade eternal blessings for momentary comfort?
