A Transformed Heart | Jonah 2:1-10

Pastor Anton Brown - 6/5/2022

Sermon Outline:

Big Idea: God uses the pressure of our circumstances to transform our hearts.
  1. From disobedience to obedience (2-3)
  2. From idols to the salvation of the Lord (8-9)
  3. We may hope in the Lord at all times (4-7)

Bible Fellowship Group Study Questions:

  1. Pastor Anton's "Big Idea" is that God uses the pressure of our circumstances to transform our hearts. How have your own past or present circumstances changed your heart?
  2. In verse 2, what does Jonah do that indicates that he is ready to be obedient to the Lord?
  3. Jonah avoided the difficult situation God asked him to embrace (going to Nineveh).  Look at James 1:2-4 and John 16:33.  Are tough situations abnormal for followers of Jesus? Should Christians avoid difficult circumstances in their lives or embrace them?  Why or why not?
  4. The "Throne Staircase Diagram" was used as an illustration of how things can become our idols. An idol is anything that we make more important than God. Do you have anything in your life that you are concerned might be an idol? Is there anything in our church we elevate over God?
  5. Read verses 4-7.  In a time of great pressure, Jonah hopes in the Lord because of His past faithfulness. What were those things to which Jonah is pointing? Have you ever let difficulty or stress rob you of the fullness of life God intended for you? How would reminding yourself of God's past faithfulness help during such times?
